Hey, there might be people floating around your neck of the woods who need eating knives. As a smith, everybody will want to be your friend!
Regia has its quirks, such as all new members holding the official rank of 'slave', as this was the lowest level in Viking and Saxon society. By Regia terms, it rougly translates as "new to this lark; play nice, and rescue them if the public start asking them questions they can't answer". A slave's 'owner' mentors them through the first year or so. In practical terms, this means that when you're at a show, you may end up running the occasional errand.
I've encountered a Ren Faire. I had twitch fits. I've also encountered the UK SCA, and they gave me fits as well, some of them laughter fits. It just seemed like an elaborate game of dress-up and let's pretend for adults. Not to say that I don't run around in funny clothes and answer to a strange name once a week, but we tend the whole persona thing a bit less seriously. It's more about learning about the time period, and eductaing the public. Oh, and we don't wear polycotton tunics!
